Alumnus of AIIMS and IIT Kharagpur Shashi Ranjan and Debayan Saha together along with Sashi Ranjan biomedical scientist of NUS, Singapore has come up with a new set-up, a biomedical robot which has the power of sanitizing cities to minimize the spread of novel coronavirus. They claim with this robotic device named: “Airlens Minus Corona” they can, fortunately, tackle the problem of cross-infection of COVID- 19.
The mechanism of this machine is quite interesting, upon ionizing or charging it sprinkles water droplets to its surroundings which oxidizes the viral protein of novel coronavirus, which makes it a non-harmful molecule, as claimed by the trio.
Upon asking more about the mechanism of this robot, Ranjan among the three researchers, also one of the co-founders of an IT start-up PerSapien Innovations explained, they were looking for a great antimicrobial tool that can sterilize a full-size metropolitan city, for that the oxidation process was unmatchable.
The oxidation process is also termed as virus inactivation, as the atmospheric oxygen does not have the capacity to break the virus protein by inactivating it. This oxidation technique will help to split their capsid protein. This technology operates with the help of an optimal combination of electric energy along with the water atomization technique to trigger a charge on water droplets while generating hydroxyl radicals one of the most potent oxidative entities that can kill the coronavirus by oxidizing it.
If the machine can perform in public areas, especially those under the high risk of spreading the virus, i.e. railway stations, bus stop, hospitals, nursing homes, testing labs, shopping malls, we can actually harness the virus from further spreading.
Another co-founder, Debayan Saha further added special categories of alcohols like ethanol (or IPA) could kill viruses by dissolving their protein coat. That is alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used to maintain personal hygiene, but when it comes to large scale use, they cannot fight against COVID – 19 alone. So we need some set-up that can fight the virus at the national or global scale, for which the robot sanitizer: Airlens Minus Corona has been developed by them.
Various hospital authorities are planning to purchase this robot to sanitize their organization, to ensure the safety of the health workers.
